Virgin Media warn over 800,000 customers to change passwords over hacking risk
MORE than 800,000 Virgin Media customers are being told to change their password immediately after an investigation found that hackers were able to gain access to it.
The investigation, by consumer group Which?, revealed that hackers were able to infiltrate the Virgin Media Super Hub 2 router in just four days, allowing them to gain access to users’ smart appliances, such as CCTV cameras.
Alex Neill, Which? managing director of home products and services, said: “There is no denying the huge benefits that smart-home gadgets and devices bring to our daily lives.
“However, as our investigation clearly shows, consumers should be aware that some of these appliances are vulnerable and offer little or no security.”
While Virgin Media has claimed that the risk to customers with the specific router was “small”, they have advised that both the network and router passwords should be changed if they were still set as the default password that the router came with.
They have also commented that the issue existed with other routers of the same age, not just their Super Hub 2 model.
A spokesperson from Virgin Media has reassured it’s customers that: “The security of our network and of our customers is of paramount importance to us.
“We continually upgrade our systems and equipment to ensure that we meet all current industry standards.
“We regularly support our customers through advice and updates and offer them the chance to upgrade to a Hub 3.0, which contains additional security provisions.”
To maximise security, Virgin Media have suggested that passwords should be unique and contain at least 12 characters, using a mixture of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
