Ubiquiti airFiber 5 (AF5) Review – Transcript

Craig Herrett:

Hello and welcome to 4G TV, 4Gon Solutions’ product review channel.

I’m Craig Herrett, Sales Manager at 4Gon Solutions and our sister company VoIPon, both leading distributors of communications equipment and serving customers worldwide.

Today we’re going to look at the Ubiquiti airFiber 5, a Carrier Class, Point-to-Point, Gigabit radio from Ubiquiti Networks, designed exclusively for the popular and freely used mid 5 GHz frequency, so let’s get started.

The airFiber 5 comes complete with:

  • airFiber Unit,
  • PoE adapter,
  • Power cord,
  • Mounting Equipment,
  • And documentation.

Just like the airFiber 24, the airFiber 5 is large and robust. It looks great, fitting in with the current Ubiquiti product line, and you can see here that it is the first product to ship with the updated Ubiquiti branding.

The Ubiquiti AF5 has features that include:

  • 1 Gigabit per second plus of real data throughput allowing no restrictions despite using IP Cameras, IP phone systems cloud based programs and a multitude of other applications,
  • A range of over 100 kilometers or 62 miles,
  • Frequency (FDD) and Hybrid (HDD) Division Duplex operating, allowing simultaneous communication with the efficiency of Time (TDD) Division Duplex, therefore making the best use of all bandwidth available,
  • Operation in the mid 5GHz frequency spectrum.

The advanced slide-clamp design allows for the mounting hardware to be pre-assembled before the installation. The drop-in cradle mount then allows the installer to attach mounting hardware without having to support the weight of the airFiber. With GPS synchronization and adjustable mounting kit, installation has never been easier.

The AF5U operates on the high-band licensed 5.7 to 6.2 GHz frequency, while the AF5 uses the license free mid-band frequencies, meaning it can be operated without any special permit. Just install and go.

After reviewing the airFiber 5, we’ve given it a 4Gon Rating of 10 out of 10.

The stand-out feature of this model is the incredible distance, reaching over 100 kilometers at a high throughput of over a gigabit per second in the mid 5GHz spectrum. The airFiber 5 truly offers exceptional performance at a market disruptive price.

So that was our review of the Ubiquiti airFiber 5.
