SAF microwave links ensure live broadcasting in Belgium
SAF together with a local partner Diginet created a customised solution for Belgian Flemish national broadcast company Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT). Along with the broadcaster’s fiber network, 3 transmission vans are used.
Each of them is equipped with 4 SAF Lumina radios for the implementation of 2 redundant links. At the event location, the SAF Lumina equipment is either placed on a roof of a building or installed onto a mobile tower vehicle. The upgrade from the previously used non-flexible PDH technology to a new SAF flexible IP platform for video and audio transmissions was rather revolutionary but necessary.
VRT uses the links for transporting live, high-quality video and audio signals together with a data link, each signal with a defined QoS and VLAN. A minimum required payload is 100Mb/s within a bandwidth of 30 MHz, a minimum system value is 105 dB, the same as an optical Ethernet interface, VLAN possibilities, and multicast. The broadcasting company has used the links for almost 2 years now and is satisfied with the overall performance, as well as with their stability in severe weather conditions.
