First Look at the Ubiquiti airFiber 5X
What is the airFiber 5X?
The Ubiquiti airFiber 5X is a point-to-point radio designed for long range, backhaul links. The 5X is part of the already hugely successful Ubiquiti airFiber range, delivering an unbelievable price to performance ratio to the point-to-point market. The airFiber 5X comes in a much smaller form factor than the other airFiber models, requiring it to be paired with a compatible antenna.
The AF-5X features the highest TDD throughput available and proprietary HDD for ultra-low latency. The AF-5X features industry-leading 10.6 bps/Hz spectral efficiency, covering the entire 5 GHz spectrum with one radio, and delivering up to 500+ Mbps real throughput and 200+ km range.
The AF-5X supports ± 45° slant polarization for improved noise immunity and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).
What are the key features of the airFiber 5X?
The Ubiquiti airFiber 5X has key features including:
- 500 + Mbps Throughput
- 5 GHz Frequency
- 200+ km Range
- GPS Synchronised
- Full-Band Certification including DFS
- Ubiquiti’s INVICTUS Custom Silicon
The airFiber 5X allows independent TX and RX channel frequency configurations anywhere within the radio band to avoid local interference, and the channel centers are selectable in 1 MHz increments. You also have the ability to program different uplink and downlink duty cycles to support asymmetric traffic requirements.
In a backhaul link, two AF-5X radios use patent-pending HDD technology to calculate the propagation delay and know when each radio can transmit and receive, so they send packets in precise synchronization. Packet transmission latency is virtually eliminated.
Are there any compatible products?
The AF-5X requires pairing with a compatible antenna because it does not have any built into the unit. There are a number of different options for users including antennas that have been purpose built with 45° slant polarity. The antennas include the AF-5G23-S45, AF-5G30-S45 and AF-5G34-S45.
There are also Ubiquiti RocketDish Antennas that can be paired with the airFiber 5X, with 45° slant polarity. These include the RD-5G30 and RD-5G34. To use RocketDish antennas with the 5X, users will require the RocketDish to airFiber Antenna Conversion Kit.
Ubiquiti also offer the Ubiquiti airFiber PoE Injector.
Who is the airFiber 5X targeted at?
The AF-5X is targeted at users of the unlicensed 5GHz band who want to install long range, point-to-point backhaul links. At such a cost effective price, the airFiber 5X is perfect for resellers and ideal in places where cable infrastructure is not feasable.
What other models are available?
There are a number of models in the Ubiquiti airFiber range. The airFiber 24 delivers throughput of 1.4Gbps, with a range of up to 13+km in the 24GHz spectrum. The airFiber 5 offers throughput of up to 1.2Gbps at a range of 100km in the lower 5GHz frequency spectrum. The airFiber 5U offers the same throughput and distance as the 5, but operates in the high 5GHz spectrum. The airFiber 24HD has a maximum throughput of 2Gbps at a 200km range, in the 24Ghz spectrum. To compare the different airFiber models, please see out comparison chart.
