A quick look at the Teltonika RUT500 HPSA+ 3G Router
Mobile broadband has revolutionised the way people use the internet. Gone are the days of having to wait until you can access a fixed connection. It is now possible to stay online wherever you are.
With mobile internet standards becoming more advanced, there has never been a better time to go mobile. 3G has become hugely popular and well established thanks to the extensive coverage available. Last year saw the introduction of the fourth generation of mobile communication standards to the United Kingdom. This means that a 4G Router is also an option for those who have sufficient coverage for the LTE Network.
3G was originally launched in Japan in 2001 before making its way to the USA by 2003. In 2007 there were over 200 million worldwide subscribers to 3G. The speeds achieved by users enabled them to download web pages faster than ever before, use GPS applications, watch videos on demand and participate in video calls.
Teltonika look to provide solutions that integrate scientific and technological advances with people’s everyday lives. A Teltonika 3G Router ensures that the users remain connected globally with no distance limitations. The only requirements are a Teltonika 3G Router and a SIM card from a mobile internet service provider.
The Teltonika RUT500 is a compact SPA+ 3G router with high speed wireless and Ethernet connections. The RUT500 connects to the 3G network, enabling it to offer download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. There is still the option to use a wired connection via a broadband cable thanks to the WAN port on the device.
The design of the unit is small, compact, tidy and robust, coming with three antennas, one of which has GSM functionality and the other two wireless. The RUT500 also has 4 available Ethernet ports, three LAN and one WAN.
- HSPA+ 14.4Mbps DL and 5.75Mbps UL
- Quadband UMTS and GSM
- Complies with IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b wireless standards
- Complies with IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.3u standards
- Four Ethernet ports
- Durable aluminum housing
- External antennas
- Integrated OpenVPN and Dynamic DNS
- 3G backup WAN function

The 3G Sim Card is inserted into the device by removing the back panel and slotting into position, as shown below.
The RUT500 Router supports the latest IEEE802.11n as well as IEEE802.11b/g standards and provides a wireless receiving and transmitting rate of up to 150 Mbps.
The 4Gon technical team decided to test the Teltonika RUT500 to see what speeds and performance they could obtain. The following screenshot shows the results of the test carried out on the Teltonika RUT500 by 4Gon. Solutions.
The results show a 6.50Mbps download speed and a 2.77Mbps upload speed which was a good result for the geographical location.
In a recent review on 4Gon, customer Dapo Ladimeji said that the RUT500 was:
easy to install. Connectivity can be occasionally flaky but does eventually resolve itself. I am in an area with lots of high buildings and performance is far better than dongles I have used.”
