A Quick Look and Review of the Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC (UAP-AC)

The Ubiquiti UniFi AC is the fastest UniFi model which supports 802.11ac.  The Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC, also available as a 3-pack which you will see in the images here, Boasting speeds of up to 1300 Mbps with a range of up to 400 ft at excellent value for money.

Key Features

  • Simultaneous Dual-Band Operation with 2.4 and 5 Ghz Speeds
  • Up to 450 Mbps on 2.4 Ghz
  • Up to 1300 Mbps on 5 Ghz
  • Range up to 400 ft (122 m)
  • WiFi-Standards 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • 3 x 3 MIMO Technology
  • Two Gigabit Ethernet Ports
  • Power over Ethernet
Alongside the typical 802.11 a/b/g/n support, this new UAP access point is equipped to utilise the high speed 802.11ac WiFi standard at the 5GHz frequency. 802.11ac is gaining traction in the wireless market and it is expected that there will be one billion 802.11ac compliant devices around the world  by 2015. It is this protocol, supported by the Ubiquiti UniFi AC, that enables the incredible Gigabit speeds of up to 1.3 Gbps.
The UAP-AC supports 200+ concurrent clients, up to 4 BSSIDs per radio, is 802.3at PoE+ compliant, has WEP, WPA-PSK & WPA-TKIP wireless security and is wall or ceiling mountable.

What’s In The Box?

In the single unit box, you will find:

  • 1x Ubiquiti UniFi AC Unit
  • 1x Gigabit PoE Adapter
  • 1x Power Cable
  • 1x Mounting Bracket
  • 1x Bracket Adapter
  • 1x Mounting screw set
  • Product Disc and Documentation
In the 3-Pack, you can expect to find 3 of everything except the product disc and documentation where there is still just one.

Look & Feel

The first point to note here is the change in shape of this new UniFi. While the previous model casings were circular, Ubiquiti have gone in a different direction making it square with smooth, bevelled edges. Sporting the blue front LED found on the UAP-PRO, as opposed to the green of the UAP and UAP-LR, also helps to set it aside as being a premium model.

The sleek design makes the device look especially good when wall or ceiling mounted. Cables can be routed behind, creating a very clean installation. After picking up the unit, it is heavier and feels more solid than the previous UniFi devices, but still weighing in at just 508g without mounting kits (566g with).

If the device is turned over, the two Gigabit Ethernet ports can be seen.

How Does This Compare?

The UAP-AC is the newest iteration in a series of well-established access points. Firstly, taking a look at the original UAP shows that the technical specifications have been built upon greatly by adding dual-band, 5GHz functionality, increasing speed from 300Mbps and now allowing more than the 100 concurrent users offered by the standard UAP. The story is similar with the UAP-Long Range, however the AC does not quite reach the 600ft range offered by the LR, coming in at a respectable 400 ft instead.

The UAP-PRO is in a similar league to the AC above the other two, by having dual-band and up to 200 concurrent users, but does not support 802.11ac or have the same potential data speed, clocking in at a maximum of 450 Mbps to the UAP-AC’s 1300 Mbps. Both the PRO and AC are 802.3af compliant.

The Bottom Line

The wait is over and the first shipment of UAP-AC’s are now on their way to 4Gon customers. Arriving with a well-received redesign, Ubiquiti have delivered a device worthy to take top spot in the UniFi range.

Supporting the 802.11ac protocol also means this is a device that will stay relevant for many years to come. Incredible data speed and range with a great price point makes the Ubiquiti UniFi AC the ideal, infinitely scalable choice for a wide range of applications.
