A Quick Look and Review of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter PoE
Ubiquiti Networks is arguably the most popular manufacturer of wireless hardware right now, and have recently announced a whole host of new products. While those products are on their way, we are going to be taking a look at the EdgeRouter PoE, part of the existing range of Ubiquiti EdgeMAX routers.
- 5 Gigabit, PoE configurable ports
- 3 Gbp/s for packets 512 bytes or larger in size
- 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports that support 24V or 48V PoE output
- Hardware accelerated routing (layer 3 base forwarding): 1,000,000 pps for 64-byte packets
- Built-in hardware switch allows line-rate layer-2 switching
What’s in the Box?
In the EdgeRouter PoE box, you will find:
- 1 x EdgeRouter 5-Port PoE Unit
- 1 x Power Adapter
- 1 x Power Cable
- 1 x Mounting screw set
- Product Documentation
Look and Feel
The mesh metal casing gives it not only a great industrial look, but will provide excellent airflow to keep heat levels down. The unit is fairly heavy, weighing in at 360g for a box that is only 200 x 90 x 30mm. This gives it a sense of quality and solid construction. The basic rectangular shape makes it perfect for stacking and wall mounting.
How Does This Compare?
This 5-port model comes in the EdgeMAX range just above the 3-port EdgeRouter Lite version. The EdgeRouter PoE offers 5 ports compared to the 3 on the Lite. Three of the ERPoE’s ports are also Ethernet switching ports.
The Bottom Line
As with the rest of the Ubiquiti catalogue, the EdgeRouter PoE really delivers excellent performance for the price. Quick, easy deployment means your system can be up and running in minutes and with the benefits of PoE, there are less cables to manage. The EdgeRouter PoE provides all this and more making it ideal for managing your network.
